Im planning to go to san francisco but i dont know if my car can make it. It a 96 honda civic dx. I dont know if it make it. I dont wanna be stranded in the middle of now where. |||You don't say why you don't know if your car can make it? How many miles are on it? Is it giving you any trouble or is it generally reliable? Have you kept up maintenance? Are the brakes good etc.? Is the timing belt due to be replaced? You wouldn't want that to break on a trip.
Take it to a local Firestone dealer and have them do a safety check. It only cost $20 in NJ for this service [don't know if California would be the same] and they are quite thorough for $20. When was the last time you replaced spark plugs etc.?
No matter, even if everything looks good, there is always the possibility that something unexpected could happen. So there can never be any guarantees. Still it is a Honda.|||Why not? Unless it's falling apart at the seams or you have some serious mechanical issues then you should be fine. I might recommend doing a tune up and changing all the fluids that are routinely due for a change then go for it! It's a beautiful drive and you should see plenty. Have a great trip and GOOD LUCK!!|||that has everthing to do with how well you took care of the car|||of course friend.... if you find any problem , go to the nearest internet cafe and send my e - mail
mardaneez@yahoo.com and i will be happy to solve all of your problems.|||Hondas are pretty reliable, and that's only a 5 hour drive....unless your car is in really poor shape, you'll make it :). And it's California. Not many places on I-5 that are REALLY "middle of nowhere"....you're always reasonably close to SOMETHING! Try breaking down in Wyoming (been there, done that ;)....
Carry a cell phone, if you don't have one get a prepaid one. Make sure there's air in your spare tire, carry a couple gallons of water, and if you're really concerned, carry a couple extra belts for your alternator %26amp; water pump. They're cheap and you can get them at an auto parts store. Having them will save you extra $$$ if one breaks and you have to call a service truck. You'll only be charged for the callout and labor, NOT a jacked-up parts charge for the belt and potentially an extra charge if the service guy has to go BACK to the shop to get the right belt!
If my best friend's 1993 Isuzu Trooper with over 200,000 miles on it, original motor, can make the drive from Orlando to Seattle and back again, I am sure your Honda will do just fine. They're great cars. I have one, wouldn't trade it for the world :). |||If it's this big of a concern, Take it to your mechanic and have him look it over. Explain to him what your planing on doing and they will give it a good looking over. However there is no reason why your car should not be able to make the trip. the trip is only 400 miles, you drive 400 miles about every 2 weeks. so there is no reason why it should not make it. |||I have a '94 Honda Civic that was purchased by the original owner in California. The car was later driven all the the way to Pennsylvania, and then to New York. Just make sure to do an oil change beforehand if it hasn't been done in a while. And check for any fluid leaks as well. As long as nothing is wrong with it, it will make the trip with no problems.|||If you haven't kept up with the typical maintenance, don't do it.
I drove from SF to LA on a civic 95 and back a couple years ago. I changed the engine oil, air filter, spark plugs, checked and filled all fluids before the trip. However, I still ran into one problem when I arrived in LA; my radiator was losing coolant. I was lucky as it turned out to be a bad radiator cap which is only a few dollars.
Running 80+ mph for 6 hours on a long stretch can be nerve racking. If you happen to run into problems on I-5, you won't be stranded alone as plenty of cars will be passing you by. But the problem is how many hundreds of dollars will you need to pay for towing to the "nearest" autoshop.
If you're not confident that you've kept up with maintenance and haven't had a full evaluation and inspection, just rent a car. Enterprise has some pretty good deals.
Good luck!
