Will my 1998 Honda Civic be able to survive a trip from San Diego to Chicago?
I'm planning a road trip from San Diego to Chicago with my 1998 Honda. It has about 88,000 miles and still runs great, but I'm not sure it will make it that far without having complications. Any suggestions, answers, advise? Has anyone attempted this with an older car?|||I agree with all the above answers. I will add my two cents. If you don't know how to figure gas millage learn, this way you will always know how long you can drive before stopping for gas. Put one gallon of fuel in the trunk, put a gallon or 2 of coolant in the trunk, put basic hand tools, jumper cables, duct tape and maps in the trunk. Put a couple of quarts of oil in the trunk. Pull a mile or two off the highway for the best gas prices. You can get a basic AAA card for about 60 bucks, if you break down you will be glad you have it. I used to make the trip with a CB radio. Good for finding "bear traps" and conditions ahead. If you hit snow don't continue, you are a rookie, its dangerous. Wish I could join you. Good luck.|||I wouldn't chance it. Look for decent air fares.|||Give it a tune up make sure everything is working properly. and you would be able to make it to NY if you wanted to. Go for it. just make sure the temperature and gas is good on the drive. Good Luck! and have fun.|||It's not a question that can be answered. I wouldn't be afraid to do it though. Take the car into the garage and have all the preventive maintenance items taken care of. They will be able to tell you if anything looks questionable. This won't be a guarantee but just a little assurance.|||change oil, plugs, air filter maybe have a reputable mechanic to look it over. dont ignore your tires and brakes have them looked at. i trust honda i put 60 000 k on a 83 hatchbasck in less than a year.
